Learning Support - SPGS International

Learning Support

For the majority of situations where a child needs some additional provision in one or two specific areas, in-class support is often the best way to address an issue. This is carried out by your child’s class teachers or tutors, as part of our continuous student tracking and individualised teaching.

For learning situations that require more specific attention, we use specialised teaching staff who will work with your child to develop an individualised programme of learning.

Teachers are always on hand to explain your child’s development programme and working in partnership with families is a priority.

  • English Language Support

At SPGS International School Chengdu, our main language of instruction is English, and we want all children to have the necessary English language skills so that they enjoy and get the most from their education with us.

On entry to the school, children are comprehensively assessed on their English capabilities and then grouped according to their ability to ensure that they are receiving the highest level of EAL support matched to their specific needs.

Our staff are experienced in working with children of all language backgrounds and our vibrant and diverse school environment affords many opportunities for children to be immersed in English language – whether this is in Drama club, on the sports field or in a social club. This international atmosphere means that children develop their English skills quickly and in a fun and interactive way.

Additionally, at Junior level (Nursery – Year 6), all classrooms have full-time native English classroom teachers and bilingual Chinese teachers. While the main class instruction is in English, teachers use ‘immersion learning’ for small group and individual instruction, so that students have the opportunity to learn in both English and/or Chinese. This helps ensure that younger children possess a full understanding of the curriculum even while their English language skills are developing.
