Between 1914 and 1916, the famous composer Gustav Holst, who once served as the Director of Music at St Paul’s Girls’ School in London, created the classic orchestral suite The Planets, which profoundly influenced the development of classical music. Inheriting the musical genes from its alma mater, SPGSI Chengdu  has always attached great importance to music and art in its daily teaching, because we firmly believe that good education is not limited to the imparting of book knowledge, but more about guiding students to practice beauty and nourish their souls.

Spring fills Chengdu, and harmony crosses mountains and seas. On the evening of April 14th, led by Dr. Edward Wickham, Director of Music at St Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge and Guest Professor of Music  at SPGSI Chengdu, the joint concert of St Catharine’s College Choir, University of Cambridge and SPGSI Chengdu  Choir came to a warm conclusion at the Chengdu High-Tech Zone China Performing Arts Grand Theatre. Both sides presented a feast of music blending Chinese and Western styles to Chengdu in spring with their pure voices.

As a music and cultural exchange event, at the performance, St Catharine’s College Choir, University of Cambridge, SPGSI Chengdu  Student Choir, Parent Choir and CPAA Children’s Choir jointly sang two classic Chinese songs, “Jasmine Flower” and “Chengdu”; SPGSI Chengdu  Choir also performed the famous British folk song “Greensleeves” together with the Cambridge Choir, achieving the perfect integration of Chinese and Western melodies.

Dr. Edward Wickham, Director of Music at St Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge, is visiting SPGSI Chengdu  for the third year to provide music guidance and exchanges, witnessing the development of SPGSI and the growth of its students. As one of the most successful choirs at the University of Cambridge, St Catharine’s College Choir has also selected SPGSI Chengdu  as its first tour stop outside Europe and the United States.

I think our collaboration between the st. Catherine’s Choir and s SPGSI choir shows how music can reach across cultural and linguistic borders and also across age groups. Being able to bring my own students here to work with your students is really a great privilege.

This concert received strong support from the Chengdu High-Tech Zone China Performing Arts Grand Theatre, and SPGSI will continue to work hand in hand with the theatre to fulfill its commitment as a Joint Institution for International Arts Education and a Global Arts Practice and Exchange Base.

The elegance of Cambridge students blends with the enthusiasm of SPGSI teachers, students and parents. This cross-regional harmony is not only an auditory feast, but also a vivid reflection of  SPGSI Chengdu’s practice of international education concepts and transmission of cultural inclusiveness. As an international school adhering to academic rigor, SPGSI will continue to build in-depth exchange platforms with world-top universities to help students thrive in cross-cultural exchanges.
